The story weaves itself mostly around Marion’s cozy cottage. We see her peaceful daily life in the garden, living all by herself, with no one to care for her – except her glowflies and her loyal familiar, Peek. She’s an independent herbalist, living on the outskirts of the village, away from the hustle and bustle of town, selling her potions on market days.
It’s quiet. It’s gentle. It’s like reading a slice-of-life story with just a whisper of mystery – and then Lorik crashes into her world, and everything shifts.
World-Building with a Room to Breathe
Author Zoey Draven draws readers into Allavar, weaving a cozy yet mysterious atmosphere that lets both the characters and the plot breathe naturally. She completely avoids the dense, extraneous details and unnecessary lore that often slow down modern fantasy novels.
What I found incredibly refreshing was how both characters were introduced without a prominent physical sketch. Instead of immediately mentioning how gorgeous and flawless they both were, I got to know them through their unique personalities and quirks.
Marion feels instantly relatable through her very human flaws rather than a polished, perfect appearance. Her humble background is reflected in the holes in her shawl and the worn-out dresses she wears. Despite that, Zoey knows her audience well and doesn’t rob readers of Lorik’s handsome appearance.
Connection Built on Respect & Emotional Intimacy
Lorik and Marion’s bond grows organically. Though they are instantly drawn to one another from the beginning, they take their time to truly know each other before love blossoms.
Their relationship is built on gentle presence, patience, and quiet acts of mutual care rather than grand gestures – in the ways Lorik remembers how Marion takes her tea, quietly repairing things around her house where help was needed.
Their quiet devotion is perhaps most evident when Marion tends to Lorik’s wounds. In one particularly tender moment, Lorik simply watches her before saying:
“You’re a beautiful woman,” Lorik told me, watching me quietly. I got the strangest sense that he was soaking in my smile, enjoying it, savoring it. There was patience lining the sharp bones of his face, as if we had all the time in the world, lingering on the edge of my cottage’s land.”
Another heartwarming line reveals how deeply Lorik values Marion—not just as a romantic interest, but as an artisan whose craft and talents he genuinely admires:
“I had no use for sleeping potions. Yet there was an alarming part of me that wanted something of hers. Something that she’d made. Something that she’d poured her time and talents into.”

Marion’s fears of never finding her person, never experiencing true love, and never having a family of her own resonated deeply with me. It is a universal feeling we all go through from time to time.
Her thoughts about feeling stagnant, never growing, and fearing to leave what felt comfortable and familiar made those heavy emotions seem a little less lonely.
A Note on the Pacing & Ending
If you crave high-stakes action, epic battles, or complex plot twists, this might feel too quiet – even mundane. The story is deliberately simple, focusing on Marion’s daily life, her garden, and her growing connection with Lorik. It’s a slice-of-life romance with a hint of mystery, not an adventure.
The ending was also a bit open-ended for my taste. Although we do leave the protagonists in a happy place, I would’ve loved a few more chapters to see what choices Marion made, and how she and Lorik navigate his responsibilities as a skilled hunter from the Below – and how they balance their relationship further.
The resolution is explained rather than shown – we’re told about agreements with the Below King, magicked birds, and adjusted duties, but we don’t get to witness those moments. Perhaps that’s intentional for the novella style, but I couldn’t help wishing for just a little more time with them in their new dynamic.
Final Thoughts
If you enjoy lean world-building, quiet intimacy, and slow-burn moments that linger in your mind, you will adore this one. You’ll leave Allavar with a happy smile and a full heart.
